American Biophysics Corporation selected Alektrona to design and implement ZigBee™ technology for a new biting insect mitigation system called AIR FENCE™. By using ZigBee™, the AIR FENCE™ system allows a set of Mosquito Magnets® to be remotely monitored for fault conditions and the exhaustion of consumables, like propane and chemical attractants.

Each Mosquito Magnet® is outfitted with an Alektrona designed ZigBee™ radio and antenna module. This module enables data to be passed over long distances via a mesh network to a system gateway. The ability to leverage ZigBee's™ native mesh routing was critical to this system since most units would not be within RF range of the system gateway. The system gateway, licensed from Alektrona, interfaces to ABC's web services and periodically updates the status of each unit in the system.

By relying on Alektrona for their ZigBee™, Internet, and embedded systems experience, American Biophysics remained focused on their core expertise of trapping biting insects.

The certified ZigBee™ platform used in the Mosquito Magnet is TI's CC2430 SoC on a high power Cirronet module. A demo of the system was shown in the TI booth at both the Embedded Systems Conference Boston and Electronica 2006 in Munich.
